Europe by bike

Cycling trips in Europe
Europe offers remarkable diversity for cycle touring, with atmospheres, terrain and cultures that change from one region to the next.
Some destinations favour major cycle routes and greenways, while others follow quiet country roads, towpaths or coastal itineraries. Between river valleys, Atlantic or Mediterranean coastlines, wine-growing countryside and mountain ranges, each region offers its own way of discovering the area by bike.
At Ekilib, our itineraries in Europe cover a wide range of experiences. Ride along great rivers such as the Loire, the Danube or the Rhine, cross the bright landscapes of Portugal or Spain, explore the Greek islands between sailing stages, follow the coasts of the North Sea or the Baltic, discover alpine valleys, or take on the legendary passes of the Alps and the Pyrenees if you are looking for a challenge. Regions such as Ireland, Scotland and Scandinavia offer vast natural spaces, shifting light and quiet roads opening onto the ocean, lakes or moorland.
Cycling is also a way into local history and culture. Castles and medieval villages, port towns, monasteries, ancient roads and coastal citadels line the routes. Each stage is an opportunity to taste regional specialties, whether seafood, local cheeses and cured meats, Mediterranean cuisine, local wines or craft beers. In the evening, you return to accommodations selected for their comfort and character, often located in the heart of villages or in preserved natural settings.
The routes favour well-designed, and enjoyable itineraries, on established bike paths, national cycle routes or quiet secondary roads. Depending on the destination, you can travel self-guided, in a group or in a bike-and-boat format. These trips combine sailing and cycling, whether on river cruises along Europe’s great rivers or maritime island-hopping itineraries, with the boat serving as both your accommodation and the daily starting point for each stage.
Whether you are looking for an accessible trip on flat terrain, an active itinerary between sea and countryside, or a more athletic route with elevation gain, Europe brings together particularly favourable conditions for cycle touring: developed infrastructure, suitable distances, a wide variety of landscapes and cultural richness at every stage.

Why choose Europe by bike?
Europe is the best continent in the world for cycle touring. Thousands of kilometers of signed bike paths, a EuroVelo network connecting countries to one another, and accommodations designed for cyclists: everything is in place to make your cycling trip smooth and enjoyable.
Distances between points of interest are often short, allowing you to enjoy many discoveries without rushing . You pass through gmedieval village in the morning, have lunch in a trattoria at noon, and ride along a vineyard in the afternoon. Cycling offers freedom of movement that neither a car nor a train can provide.
And then there is diversity. Dutch plains one day, alpine passes the next. Mediterranean coasts in May, Scandinavian forest roads in July. Whatever type of landscape attracts you, Europe offers a cycling route that suits you.
What level do you need to cycle in Europe?
There is no minimum level required to take a cycling trip in Europe with Ekilib. Each tour includes a clear difficulty indication, and the routes are designed to suit different cyclist profiles.
Leisurely routes (30 to 50 km per day, flat or slightly rolling terrain) are ideal if you ride a few times a year for pleasure. Active routes (50 to 70 km per day) are designed for those who ride regularly. Athletic routes (70 to 100 km per day, with elevation gain) are intended for enthusiasts who see cycling as a way of life.
In the Self-Guided trip type, you adapt your day according to how you feel at the moment: shortening a route, taking a rest day, or swinging by a village that intrigues you. Your Ekilib guide remains reachable at all times to adjust the program. The routes adapt to how you’re feeling that day, never the other way around.

When to Go Cycling in Europe?
Cycling in Europe is mainly enjoyed from April to October, with variations depending on the region.
Spring (April–May): mild temperatures, blooming landscapes and still-quiet roads. This is the ideal season for the Netherlands (the tulips in April are worth the trip on their own), France (Loire, Provence) and Portugal.
Summer (June–August): high season, perfect for northern destinations (Scandinavia, Scotland, Ireland) and Bike & Boat trips on the Danube or the Rhine. Southern Europe can be hot in July and August; the islands (Croatia, Greece) offer the sea breeze as compensation.
Autumn (September–October): golden light, vineyards during harvest, mild temperatures and dispersed crowds. This is a preferred period for Italy, Croatia, southern France and Spain. Those in the know often favour this season.
The south of the continent (Spain, Portugal, Greece, southern Italy) can be cycled comfortably from March through November, which considerably extends the travel window.
