Puglia from Matera to Lecce, Between Culture, Olive Groves & Trulli

This 9-day route connects two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: The Sassi of Matera, cave dwellings inhabited since prehistoric times, and the trulli of Alberobello, unique stone constructions with conical roofs. Between the two, seven cycling stages cross Baroque villages, Primitivo vineyards, Adriatic cliffs and the far end of Italy’s heel.

You travel at your own pace, without a guide. Your luggage is transferred at each stage, and GPS tracks guide you along secondary roads in the south. Two levels of accommodation are offered: Comfort (3 stars) or Prestige (4 stars).

Itinerary

The markers on the map locate each stage approximately. They do not correspond to the exact address of your accommodation. The overnight stays indicated in the itinerary may change depending on availability. The exact address appears in your travel booklet.

Day 1 | Individual arrival in Matera

Individual arrival in Matera. Depending on your arrival time, use the time available to visit the city, the Sassi and the park of rock churches, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will be amazed to see houses, churches, and monasteries built into the natural caves of the Murgia.

  • Overnight: in Matera

Day 2 | Matera – Alberobello (76 km)

Delivery of your bike and route notes followed by a welcome meeting in English. As you ride through the southern part of the Murgia and its wonderful colors, you reach Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a town known worldwide for its typical small stone houses built in the shape of cones: the Trulli.

  • Elevation gain: 650 m
  • Overnight: in Alberobello

Day 3 | Alberobello – Ostuni (52 km)

You leave Alberobello to ride through the Itria Valley, on secondary roads linking gentle hills, centuries-old olive trees and vineyards. The route alternates small climbs and more rolling sections between Locorotondo, Martina Franca and Cisternino, white villages with quiet lanes.

A stop at a fornello pronto, a typical butcher shop where you choose your meat before having it grilled, is part of the experience. The end of the stage leads to Ostuni, perched at 218 m, with a view over the plain to the Adriatic.

  • Elevation gain: 600 m
  • Overnight : in Ostuni

Day 4 | Ostuni – Manduria (70 km)

You leave Ostuni and cycle on a beautiful country road toward San Vito dei Normanni, where you can admire the magnificent Frederick’s castle overlooking the town square. After a few kilometers, you can discover other castles in Mesagne and Oria.

Arrival in Manduria marks the entry into Primitivo territory. At the end of the day, a tasting of this emblematic red wine of the region is possible.

  • Elevation gain: 250 m
  • Overnight: in Maduria

Day 5 | Manduria – Gallipoli (70 km)

You reach the Ionian coast and follow the shoreline toward Porto Cesareo, with several sections close to the sea. The route alternates secondary roads and more open stretches, to the peninsula of Gallipoli. The old town is best explored on foot, between narrow lanes, Baroque churches and old palaces linked to the maritime history of the port.

  • Elevation gain: 350 m
  • Overnight: in Gallipoli

Day 6 | Gallipoli – Santa Maria di Leuca (52 or 75 km)

Two options today. The short route (52 km) follows the Ionian coast directly south. The long route (75 km) makes a detour via Specchia, a village officially listed among “I borghi più belli d’Italia”, with its 16th-century palaces and medieval castle. The two options converge toward Santa Maria di Leuca, the extreme tip of the heel, where the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic meet beneath the Finibus Terrae lighthouse.

Option 1 – 52 km, elevation gain : 230 m
Option 2 – 75 km, elevation gain : 530 m

  • Overnight: in Santa Maria di Leuca

Day 7 | Santa Maria di Leuca – Otranto (63 km)

You ride north along the Adriatic coast. The route follows a more demanding coastal road, with several climbs and descents, between cliffs and small marinas such as Tricase Porto and Castro. Arrival in Otranto marks the easternmost tip of Italy. The old town is best explored on foot, between ramparts, lanes and harbour.

  • Elevation gain: 650 m
  • Overnight: in Otranto

Day 8 | Otranto – Lecce (56 km)

Before leaving Otranto, take time to visit the cathedral and its mosaics. The route then follows the coast, passing the Alimini lakes, then Torre dell’Orso and its beaches. A stop in Acaya allows you to discover this fortified village before arriving in Lecce, known for its Baroque architecture.

  • Elevation gain: 285 m
  • Overnight: in Lecce

Day 9 | Lecce – End of Stay

The stay ends after breakfast. The Basilica di Santa Croce deserves a final hour: its façade mobilized stonecutters for nearly 150 years, from 1548 to 1695. Lecce is explored on foot, without rushing, before the return flight.

Each bike is generally equipped with a rear pannier (except carbon bikes) to carry your personal belongings during the day, a lock and a repair kit for punctures. Travelers are responsible for simple puncture repairs during the stage. Helmets are not always provided, so we recommend bringing your own helmet for greater comfort and safety.

It is generally possible to bring your own bike; we encourage you to contact us to verify. This option is generally possible for standard bikes. E-bikes are not accepted when the trip requires air transport, due to battery-related restrictions.

Cette assistance permet d’intervenir rapidement pour toute question logistique ou situation imprévue.

Luggage Transport

On self-guided trips, you are autonomous in your progress, but never alone. This assistance makes it possible to respond quickly to any logistical question or unexpected situation.

Formalities

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is essential to participate in an Ekilib trip. It must notably cover emergency medical expenses abroad, assistance, and repatriation. Coverage for trip cancellation and interruption is also strongly recommended. Traveling by bike involves physical activity and daily travel. Appropriate insurance allows you to deal with unexpected events with peace of mind. Before departure, check that your policy covers cycling as part of a trip. We also recommend checking the protections offered by your credit card or insurance company.

Flights

For this trip, international flights are not included in the price of the stay. We recommend waiting for official trip confirmation before booking your flights. You can make this booking yourself or ask our team to assist you with the process. In all cases, it is advisable to check arrival and departure times to facilitate the transfers planned in your program.
