Bike Itinerary from Prince Edward Island
This itinerary gives us an outline of a trip (cities and sites). However, it is essential to understand that an itinerary is never set in stone. There are always unforeseen circumstances (such as weather) that often make up the best part of the trip.
Route Description: The route follows safe secondary roads with little road traffic. All roads are paved and although one might think there are no mountains on the island, there are a few nice climbs that will meet all expectations for your summer stay. Don’t be afraid of the hills and get into shape for this tour.
Meet in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, the capital of the "Birthplace of Confederation". Our destination today is Summerside, about 35 km from the Confederation Bridge exit, the longest bridge in the country. This medium sized city is one of the only urban centres along with Charlottetown.
Your transfer to Summerside with your bike awaits you in the afternoon.
*For more comfort and less travel time from home, we suggest flying to Charlottetown.
Our journey on the Confederation Trail takes us to Wellington. This famous trail is built on an old railway that runs 450 km from west to east. Think of it as similar to our P’tit Train du Nord tour.
Afterwards, head for the Cap-Egmont lighthouse and Mount-Carmel where incredible views begin your maritime journey. A visit to the Acadian Museum of Prince Edward Island in Miscouche is recommended to sample the local heritage and culture.
The day's ride is primarily flat on quiet roads with beautiful seaside scenery.
Second night in Summerside
It’s a morning departure from Summerside following the coastal roads to Malpeque Bay. The area's beautifully developed and inviting beaches are a perfect place to stop and soak your feet, especially at the Cabot Beach Provincial Park, where you can pick and taste fresh oysters.
The next stop is the ever popular New London.. Birthplace of Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of the famous novel, Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908. Close to the hotel there is the possibility of visiting the author’s inspiration for the novel, Green Gables Heritage Site.
Night in Cavendish
Leaving Cavendish, cycle into the quintessential tourist attraction in the Acadian region, the Prince Edward Island National Park and explore its beaches and dunes. Cavendish beaches are part of the national park and have walking trails and interpretation sites on beach ecology, geology, wildlife and archaeology. This is followed by a beautiful bike trail along the cliffs to North Rustico harbour, bringing you to your waypoint.
Night in Brackley Beach.
At this point, we suggest adding the optional 10km round trip to the end of the park. Discover the walking trails that lead to some of the lesser-used beaches. Why? Brackley Beach is the destination of choice for Charlottetown residents because of its proximity. For a change of pace, they bike to and walk on the miles of red sand!
Bypass Tracadie Bay and head towards Mount Stewart along the Hillsborough River, before finishing at St. Peters Bay.
Night in St-Peters Bay.
Continue the journey towards the eastern tip of the island, taking small roads that follow the coast until you reach the magnificent lighthouse at the eastern tip of the island.
Several side lanes will avail us of superb views of the sea before reaching Souris. Souris was the service centre of the island for a long time, given the presence of the much-coveted ferry that serves the Îles-de-la-Madeleine.
At the end of the tour, finish with a visit and tasting at one of the island's artisanal distilleries located near your place of stay.
Night in Rollo Bay.
Head south to Montague where the day alternates between inland rides and sea views. You may decide to visit "The Garden of the Gulf Museum" to learn more about what awaits you on this day. At the end of the day, meet up for an award-winning beer at the local brewery, Copper Bottom Brewing.
Night in Montague.
On this last day of cycling, discover the inland of the island with its countless potato fields that are used to make the much-desired chips for the aperitif after a good day of cycling. The journey ends by discovering the charm of the island’s Capital. Stay two nights to fully appreciate it before returning home.
Night in Charlottetown.
Your stay ends after breakfast. Extend your stay to discover the capital!
